Box-car Garden

My final design transforms the drainage functions and aesthetic environment of the section of Volunteer Boulevard between Joe Johnson and Todd Helton Drives. The parking lanes parallel to the sidewalks become vegetated bioswales and the lowest section of the railyard asphalt lot is reimagined as a rain garden surrounding a retired train box-car.

This new garden provides a softer, more organically textured space within the framework of the industrial rail yard. In addition to aesthetically transforming this section of Volunteer, the new design significantly enhances the ecological functionality and possibilities of the space. Visitors are brought into contact with a gradient of East Tennessee ecotones that temporarily transport them in their imaginations while making public the processes of drainage and the possibilities of green infrastructure.
