Crafting Appalachia
This regional studio asked students to identify opportunities and challenges throughout the study region that arise at the intersection of natural and anthropocentric interests or activities and to use design and landscape architecture as the primary approach to address those opportunities and challenges.
This project proposes a system of two sites that integrate the structure of an artist residency with that of a landwork residency - a climate corps-esque concept where residents would receive training for the particular site based environmental work and be in community with artists also doing site-based work. Resisting legacies of extraction and industrial transience, these residency sites engage the local community through events such as free classes, arts and culture events, and providing spaces for gatherings.
